Visiting Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, held talks with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing on Monday. The two sides agreed to advance the dialogue mechanism and carry out a number of joint exercises. Despite both sides hailing Mullen's visit as an important step towards improving China-US military ties, they were unable to reach consensus on a number of issues of mutual concern. Among the topics on the agenda, the South China Sea dispute between the two nations has featured prominently in the talks in Beijing. It is expected to be a renewed relationship between the two armies. Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen has been welcomed by his Chinese counterpart, Chief of General Staff of the People's Liberation Army Chen Bingde. Mullen is paying a reciprocal visit after Chen Bingde traveled to Washington in May. The two military heads held talks on a wide range of security issues. The predominant topic was the US involvement in the South China Sea. The US is deepening its alliances that define its presence in the region. Mullen said, "The United States has had a presence in the Asia-Pacific region for decades. And we have exercised with our allies and friends in this part of the world for decades, and we will continue to do that."
